1805 Royal Navy Midshipman Uniform
The uniform of a midshipman of the British Royal Navy, from ca.
1805.

This uniform was made for a private client, who was involved in the
Trafalgar commemorations of 2005.

The whole uniform comprises a linen shirt, a linen neck cloth, a white
woollen sleeveless waistcoat, a pair of white woollen breeches, and a
'navy' blue woollen coat.

The outfit is based on two contemporary paintings.

Although uniform regulations had been brought into force by this
date, controlling specifics such as the type of buttons, and the amount
of gold lace for an officer, these rules did not cover specifics of cut,
or design.  Consequently, the style worn by many naval personnel
was based around either prevailing civilian fashions, or a personal
liking for a particular cut.

The woollen fabric used in this uniform was supplied by Abimelech
Hainsworth.
