Late 16th / 17th century.

A blackworked bee.

The tape that you can see at the side of the picture is
marked every eigth of an inch.

Blackwork, late 16th / early
17th century.

A pattern taken from an extant
linen shirt.
The tape at the left of the main
photo is marked in eights of an inch.
Somebody at Tewkesbury a few weeks ago looked very closely at this, and assumed
it was machine sewn.  I suppose I should take that as a compliment??  But no, it's all
done by hand (my hand as it happens....).

Blackwork, 16th / 17th
century.

Another piece of blackwork...

This one was also assumed to have
been done by machine.  Again,
nope, all hand stitched.

Click on the picture for a much
better view.
17th century.

This is a salamander,
embroidered in stem stitch, in
naturally dyed woollen thread.

Again all hand done, and click
on pictures for better views!
17th century

Taken from a design on a shift in the V&A museum.

This is a tiny embroidery of a dragon.  The priginal is bigger - I
was just playing!
You can seethe tape in the picture to the left marked
in eights of an inch.

Embroidered in pink silk threads, in backstitch.

Again, all hand done, and click the photos for larger versions.
17th Century

Another 17th century embroidery taken from a shift.

This one is in darkish red silk, and entirely executed in backstitch.

As ever, click the photos for a better look.

NB - apologies for staining in the picture - this is one of the samples I take out with me when I have a
stall at outdoor fayres, and has been through a lot!!
Regency

This is a pattern taken from the sleeve of a regency dress.

I have changed the colours slightly from the original version.

This is stitched using stem stitch and satin stitch, using silks and
metallic threads.  It is embroidered onto cotton muslin, as per the
original.

You should have got the hint by now about clicking on the picture.....
Modern

This is a modern piece -
which is on the front of a
lavender bag that I made.

Again, entirely done by
hand (it would be since this
is the
hand embroidery
page) - this time in satin
stitch and backstitch.
Modern

As the big letter 'L'
might give away, this
adorns the same pair of
lavender pouches as the
floral spray above.

Again, it's all done in
satin stitch and
backstitch
Modern

Ok, it's modern because it's entirely in gold
metallic thread, with freshwater seed pearls,
and sewn on handwoven silk dupion.

But, yes, it is a historical design - 16th
century, taken from an extant piece of
embroidery (blackwork, to be precise, if you
hadn't worked it out!)
