| Another 14th century garment with lots of buttons (and lots of buttonholes). This is cut to a pattern based on the extant garment, known as the pourpoint of Charles de Blois. I am including this padding in our costume website, because although this particular version is made as a piece of padded armour, in reality, the pourpoint of Charles de Blois is not a military garment at all, but a civilian doublet, padded to give a particular shape. The waistline in particular is described as maintaining a 'vice-like' grip on the wearer.* The extant doublet is made up of sandwiches of fabric padded with raw cotton (although I've used wool fleece in this instance). The doublet is completely hand finished (including the quilting on the external sandwich, and all those buttonholes again!). The myriad buttons are hand made cloth ball buttons. (For which, out of interest, we don't charge extra!) For more information on this garment, please go to our padded armour website. *By Stella Mary Newton, in her excellent book, 'Fashion in the Age of the Black Prince'. |
