On of a pair of children's outfits, made for the National Trust. Click here to see the girl's outfit that goes with this one Both are made to fit children of around 12 years old, and both outfits are completely hand sewn.
The boy's outfit comprises a linen shirt, woollen breeches and doublet, both lined in linen, and trimmed in golden worsted braid, a wide linen 'falling' ruff, and a 'Tudor bonnet' in the same blue wool, lined and trimmed in golden handwoven silk. The doublet is cut in the 'peascod' style, with a quilted padded lining to the body (see below for picture of the lining). It fastens at the centre front, with small hand cast lead free pewter buttons (these can also just be seen at the cuff fastening). The wide over sleeves (which look a little awkward on an arm-less dummy, but which work in real life), are heavily braided. The breeches are also heavily braided, and are quite full. They fasten by means of buttons at the waist, and silk ties at the waist and knee (to allow maximum flexibility and enabling the dressing up of as many children of different sizes as possible). The outfit was meant to represent the type of clothing that would have been worn by a son of the household, while at home in the north of England. The whole ensemble is (loosely) based on a painting of a boy and his father.
Cloth hosen (not shown), and inkle woven sash garters were also supplied with each outfit.
