16th Century Doublet
16th Century Doublet
This is a skirted doublet made in black wool, and lined in a red-ish linen, made for a
private client.

There are button-down pockets in the skirt, and a self-fabric frill at the neckline and
cuffs.

All of the buttons used are hand cast pewter.
(NB - in the picture above, it looks as though some buttons are missing - they're not, of course, I just
missed those ones when I was fastening the doublet onto the stand!).

The doublet is based on a pattern to be found in 'Patterns of Fashion' by the great
Janet Arnold, taken from the surviving doublet of Nils Sture in Upsala.

The original is a leather travelling doublet, and fairly gruesomely, was worn by Nils
Sture when he, his brother and their father were murdered in the Cathedral in 1567.
